I really love fall. In addition to cooler temperatures, better fashion and an abundance of apple cider, I love fall for the concert lineup. Some of the best shows I’ve seen — Travis, Rufus Wainwright, Imogen Heap — always took place in the later months of the year. The season’s just good to me. Looks like it’ll be good to local music lovers, too:

Umphrey's McGee, jam band extraordinaire

* If you’re an Umphrey’s McGee fan (and many of you are — the band hails from Chicago and some of its members spent time at Notre Dame), they’re dropping into St. Patrick’s County Park September 5, 2008. Read more about the band in the August 28 issue of The Elkhart Truth, but if you know you like ‘em, get tickets through The Morris box office or through Ticketmaster.

* And Pete Best, a.k.a. The Original Drummer for the Beatles (yes, those Beatles) will be bringing his band across the pond to Constant Spring in Goshen September 23, 2008. Read more about the band here. I’m phoning Liverpool (yes, that Liverpool) Monday to speak with best. Do you have any good ideas for questions? E-mail me if you do.

1. Christina Applegate talks about undergoing a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

2. Noticed someone on my Twitter feed posted a phone number for an anonymous confession hot line. I’d never heard of this before, but apparently this has been a popular method of stress relief for some time now — a 1988 Time article sounded off on the freakiness.

3. For the dozen or so of you who still watch it: Saturday Night Live added a new cast member.

4. Three Romanian gypsies, 250 traveling personnel, 4 Yves Saint Laurent lipsticks … and 100 pairs of kneepads? Yep, it’s another Madonna tour.

5. Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer broke up? That was quick.

1. Dave Matthews’ sax player, LeRoi Moore, has died.

2. “Yep, I’m married” should be Ellen’s next big Time magazine cover photo. For now, here’s a picture from her wedding last weekend.

3. Here’s Michael Phelps on yet another cover … of a cereal box.

4. Ricky Martin welcomed twin boys. Apparently they were born via surrogate, the working man’s answer to fatherhood.

5. How ironic — at the office, we’re taking votes on who we think will be Obama’s veep candidate.

This weekend, I had coffee and talked music with the guys of Goshen-based band The Minor Profits. You can read more about the band in Thursday’s paper, but in case you need time to plan, their debut album, “Beloved,” will be released this Friday at a party. You’re invited:

Two reasons why you should go:
1. It’s really important to support talented people. Not only are each of the Profits experienced musicians, they’re releasing the disc at Eyedart Studios, where you can check out some more work done by “Beloved” cover artist Ben Stutsman. I can’t wait to see his pieces in person.
2. The event’s free!
