Vegetarianism Day #6

I found an image of veggie corn dogs on Google. God, I love the Internet.

The veggies-only life is still going well (I made the official switch because of this).
And because I am a hillbilly at heart, I was especially excited when I discovered veggie corndogs from Morningstar Farms. Delicious. I was raised by a flexatarian (kind of like the bisexual equivalent between vegetarian and omnivore), so I’m relatively familiar with meatless eating — pork and beef were never present at home. The transition hasn’t been difficult at all.

In about two seconds, I made an anchovies salad for dinner last night:
Butter lettuce
Tomatoes
Anchovies
Oil/Vinegar
Parmesan

Not hardcore vegetarian or anything (still eating fish), but hey, nobody’s perfect.

Reading In Defense of Food couldn’t have come at a better time. The PETA debacle yesterday really threw me for a loop. I thought about how much meat and poultry I’ve eaten throughout the course of my life, and realized the probably a really slim percentage of those animals were treated humanely while they were alive.

I really love animals, and yesterday I decided that I could do a little bit of good by electing to become a vegetarian. Interesting, though, all of the questions that come after a decision like that: Can I still eat fish? What about cheese and milk? Should I just go vegan?

How much is enough?

One of my friends suggested grass-fed beef and free range chicken, but I’ve decided to see what it’s like to cut all meat out for awhile. I think I’ll still eat fish and shellfish for protein, but then comes the moral question of selecting farmed fish vs. unfarmed. Sigh. What a can of worms … which, coincidentally, is probably the only animal I’d feel okay about eating right about now.

1. Ugh, file this one under Surely Burning in Hell: The AP obtained a videotape of Hormel hog industry workers abusing, and talking about sexually abusing, sows and piglets. Yeah, there’s not much I could say other than HELP FUND ONGOING INVESTIGATIONS AND RESCUES HERE.

2. Ellen DeGeneres is the newest Cover Girl.

3. As a faithful Facebook user since 2004, I’ve stuck with it through what seems like a million redesigns. I’ll stick with it through this new design, and chances are you will too. And so, to the general whiny public I say: Stop complaining and quit joining online protest groups. And, while you’re at it, go visit your grandparents or something. We all have other stuff to worry about …

4. … like whether this dude was OK after diving into a 12 inch deep kiddie pool. on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

5. Young@Heart, a documentary that follows the lives of a New England choir of senior citizens covering the music of Sonic Youth, James Brown, Coldplay and others, came out on DVD yesterday.
